Kombucha Leather Recipe
April 24, 2026

Kombucha leather is a bio-based material grown from a fermentation process. Using tea, sugar, and a SCOBY, you can cultivate a cellulose sheet that dries into a flexible, leather-like material.
Kombucha leather is:
- Lightweight and flexible
- Naturally textured
- Biodegradable under the right conditions
- Responsive to environmental factors like humidity
It is still an experimental material. It performs well in dry conditions but remains sensitive to water and prolonged moisture exposure.
Ingredients
- 2 L water
- 4–5 black or green tea bags (or 2 tbsp loose tea)
- 150–200 g sugar
- 200 ml raw kombucha (starter liquid)
- 1 SCOBY (optional)
Equipment
- Wide glass or food-grade container
- Cloth cover and rubber band
- Flat drying surface (tray, board, or silicone sheet)
Method
1. Prepare the tea
Boil water and steep the tea for 10–15 minutes. Remove tea and stir in sugar until fully dissolved. Let the liquid cool to room temperature.
2. Start fermentation
Pour the cooled tea into your container. Add the starter liquid and SCOBY. Cover with a breathable cloth and secure with a rubber band.
3. Grow the material
Leave undisturbed at room temperature (24–30°C). A cellulose layer will begin forming on the surface within a week. Allow it to grow for 2–4 weeks until it reaches the desired thickness.
4. Harvest
Remove the cellulose sheet carefully and rinse with clean water.
5. Dry
Lay the sheet flat on a non-stick surface and let it air dry for several days until fully dehydrated.
Optional Finishing
- Apply natural oils or glycerin for flexibility
- Add natural dyes for color
- Experiment with textures by drying on different surfaces
